Main Event Thoughts

By Karaoke Phil

The WSOP Main Event has played down to the final three - Pius Heinz, Ben Lamb and Martin Staszko - who will return this evening (11/08) to crown the championship.  As the Vikings were on bye, I forsook football and spent virtually all of Sunday following the live action.  Here are some comments and thoughts.....

I liked the coverage and commentary.  Antonio Esfandiari and Phil Hellmuth provided some insightful commentary on hands - especially without seeing the hole cards (until after a flop or preflop folds).

I don't think I liked the 15 minute delay.  We had nearly live coverage with that 15-minute delay for "the integrity of the game."   I think 30 minutes or an hour would be better.  For a standard viewer, a delay of 30 minutes or an hour is still "live", but it does a better job of maintaining play integrity.  With 15 minutes you may only have a delay of 4 or 5 hands.  That is too close to real time for my comfort. It seemed that each player had supports in the stands receiving info on the televised but time-delayed hands.   Czech Martin Staszko seemed to use the dinner break as scout report time and really adjusted his play accordingly - particularly against German Pius Heinz.  Who knows what other on-the-fly adjustments players like Ben Lamb made that changed the completion and tenor of the game.   A slightly longer delay still maintains the "live" aspect, but puts more hands between "that great bluff he made" and actually knowing about it which I think may well have altered the complexion of the play.

Now, having said the above - it seems like only Staszko adjusted his play - particularly against Heinz who was playing the ultra aggression card.  That it continued to work for him is a pity - I personally don't care for him.  Speaking of Staszko - there's a guy near and dear to my hear.  Esfandiari gave him props several times for his play during the coverage.  At one point when 4-handed Phil Hellmuth noted that Staszko's play works very well at 8 or 9 handed, but that he needed to pick up the pace and agresssion.  I think I like Martin Staszko's play because it reminds me of my own style.  And, his being Czech doesn't hurt at all.

I'm looking forward to tonight's coverage and hope that it's payback time for the Munich Agreement of 1938.  Look it up if you don't know your history and you'll find out who I'm looking at in the final two and who should win!!

Nominations for Podcast Awards Open Sept 15 - Consider the CPL Poker Podcast

The 7th Annual Podcast Awards open their nomination period on Sept. 15th.  You'll have until Sept. 30 to cast a nomination vote in a host of categories.  You can only post a single vote and we hope you will consider the CPL Poker Podcast for both the "Sports" and "Best Produced" categories!!

We think this is the year we've come into our own and feel great about asking you to throw some love our way with a nomination vote.   We hope you feel the same way!

Nominating will be fairly easy - they'll have a submission form on their website with all of the categories.  You fill it in with your nominations.  Each podcast can only be nominated in a single area - except that a show can be nominated a second time in the Best Produced or People's Choice category (we're going for the Best Produced).  You can leave categories blank - so, say you just want to nominate the CPL Poker Podcast in the "Sports" and "Best Produced" categories you can do that and leave the other areas, like the Mature category, blank - but, nominate the shows you'd like to see getting some kudos.

This is what you'll need to nominate us (or anyone else):
  • Podcast name you are nominating (for us:  CPL Poker Podcast )
  • Podcast URL ( cplpokerpodcast.com)
  • Your Name
  • Your Verifiable E-mail Address
  • Comments are critical so the reviewing team understand why a show is deserving of being nominated to the category.
You can only nominate a single time - so don't worry about needing to log in every day for weeks.  They only allow a single submission per person.   Note: that they'll be using some email verification techniques AND a small percentage of folks will be randomly asked to "verify" their vote by needing to click the verify link in a separate email.  So, if you get one of those don't forgot to click the link.

As for those comments, we trust you have your own reasons for listening to the CPL Poker Podcast but if you want some assistance you could try some of these lines of thoughts:

  • Funny and entertaining
  • Offer a wide variety of poker items from news to reviews to analysis
  • Easy to understand poker analysis
  • Entertaining and well produced show that's not just talking heads but offers transitions, solid bumper music and a MN music segment
We're going to be "pimping" this over the next couple of weeks so please bear with us for that - and don't forget to vote, once, beginning September 15th!!

August numbers in - Karaoke wins Erick's Bar and takes Season II lead

The August stats are complete for Tuesday's Free Poker Network (FPN) at Erick's Bar in St. Paul and our own Karaoke Phil both took down the month and took the overall season II lead.

Karaoke, playing in his 7th consecutive FPN promotion has already qualified for October's State Championship in this "Free Poker Network Poker Pro" offering but he is looking to earn a double chip stack at state.  He can do that by having the most points and winning the bar outright in season II, which ends in September, or, by qualifying a second time through the regional tournament structure.

By pulling down two final tables and pointing two other weeks out of the 5 Tuesdays played in August Karaoke won the month with 690 points.  His efforts also put him back ahead of Derek Bouchard and Ben Zvan who have been playing well in July and August.  Karaoke has now qualified for a double stack at Regionals with this finish and his 5th place showing in July.  A solid finish in September will either get him a triple chip stack at regions or an automatic double chip stack at State should he be the overall bar leader.

Stay tuned for more updates on his progress towards FPN's Poker Pro contract promotion.

Karaoke Plays OH8 Tourney for Practice, Gets in Cash Game

By Karaoke Phil

It was "Wacky Wednesday" at the Running Aces poker room and I took advantage of it being Spread Limit OH8 night to practice for next month's Midwest Poker Classic.  As part of our "Suck Out" staking series I am offering two separate backing packages (see the post below) and I wanted to get some practice in.  I haven't played Omaha since "Black Friday" and have never played it as spread limit.  Since this format will be in place at next month's MPC I wanted to check it out.

I have booked action for 10% of package A and 5% of the other with at least two others with "dibs" while they make a final decision. Space is available but going.  Last night's results may want you to move sooner than later.

So, here's how it went down:

Traffic on 35E had me arriving half way through level 2 (you can buy-in/re-enter through level 4).  No mind though - I folded a couple of hands and then went to work.  By first break at the end of level 4 I may well have been tourney chip leader with 58K in chips and about 70 players left (of the 91 entries).

I suffered in level 8 making my only moderately large mistake of the tourney (chasing a hand I shouldn't have been in at all).  Second break took place at the end of the level and I had been reduced to 24K in chips with 26 players remaining.  Cash payouts were set for the top 10 with the 11th place finisher getting a buy-in refund in the form of a future tourney voucher.

In Level 11, with 14 players left, I tripled up to 54K in chips.  The next hand dealt me A/2/3/7 - I bumped it up and got two callers.  With the flop of K/K/J my hand was done and I had lost most of the chips I had just won.  I busted in Level 12 - on the payout bubble in 12th.

Three plus hours at the $4/$8 Half Kill OH8 cash game afterwards saw me recoup my $65 tourney entry fee while also covering my drinks for the evening and filling up my car's empty gas tank with enough left over to go out to lunch today (and not Taco Bell).  It felt good to play OH8 again, I played well and I'm looking forward to the upcoming tourney "season".  Book your action now!!

Karaoke Phil Qualifies for FPN Monthly Championship

In his first online attempt for Free Poker Network's "Poker Pro" promotion, Karaoke Phil has qualified for their 9/1 online championship.

Karaoke "turned in" one of his game cards and played a nightly qualifier with 42 others.  When his J/8 was run down on the river by pocket 8s after the board ran out J/9/3/7/8, Phil was runner up.  The top 5 qualified for the online championship.  As of this posting there are about 90 players signed up.  The winner will get a 3-night hotel stay, airfare allowance and entry into the National Championship in Vegas this December.

FPN's "Poker Pro" Champion will earn a $10K Poker Pro contract including tournament entries into events at the Five Diamond Classic at the Bellagio, North American Poker Tour, Heartland Poker Tour, and WSOP.  Travel and cash round off the sponsorship.

Does this bode well for those looking to back Karaoke in one of the two packages being offered?  He looks to be heating up at the right time.  Portions from both packages have already been booked, but there is still some action available.
